The short version
- Film before and after from the exact same position, angle and framing.
- Keep light and settings as similar as possible.

Match your shots
The whole effect depends on the viewer seeing the same scene change. Before you start:
- Mark your camera position with tape on the floor, or leave a tripod in place.
- Take a reference photo of the framing so you can line it up again later.
- Use the same lens and zoom — don't switch between 1× and 0.5×.
- Film at the same time of day, or with the same lights on, so the change isn't just brighter light.
- For people (fitness, hair, makeup), use the same pose, distance and background.

Showing the process
A glimpse of the work makes the result feel earned. Record the process and compress it into a few seconds with a fast speed-up or time-lapse — see our speed-up guide. For long projects, a few quick clips from each stage work well. Keep it short; the reveal is the star.
Timing the reveal
- Hook first: a flash of the after image at the start, or text like "wait for it", keeps people watching.
- Hold the before long enough to register — a couple of seconds.
- Cut on the music's drop or a strong beat for maximum impact. See our music guide.
- Hold the after longer than the before, and consider a slow zoom or a final walk-around.
Step by step: make a before and after video in VDOAPP
- Add your before clip, process clips and after clip to the free online editor, in order.
- Speed up the process clips in the Clip tab.
- Choose the reveal: select the transition before the after clip in the Transition tab and pick a wipe or dissolve — or leave it as a hard cut.
- For a split screen, add the after clip as an overlay in the PiP tab, size it to half the frame and position it beside or below the before.
- Label "Before" and "After" in the Text tab.
- Add music in the Audio tab and line the reveal up with the beat.

Keep it honest
Before-and-after videos build trust only if they're real. Don't make the "before" artificially worse with darker lighting or unflattering angles, and don't apply filters only to the "after". For products, services or health and fitness results, advertising rules in many places require claims to be truthful and typical — avoid implying results that aren't realistic.
